ABSTRACT:
Background: There is increasing literature regarding the role that allied health staff can have with respect to the holistic care and spiritual well-being of patients/clients engaging with health care services. The purpose of this report is to present a scoping review of literature and resources that consider the role of nutritionists and dieticians with respect to their holistic care of patients – particularly with regard to patient religious, pastoral and/or spiritual care. Method: PICO was used to search for relevant articles. A scoping literature review was conducted using six databases. The articles were then assessed for relevance. Results: The initial search found 1,024 articles of which 20 were relevant. Seven key themes were evident. The themes were (i) holistic care, (ii) culture, (iii) education, (iv) multidisciplinary nutrition, (v) religion, (vi) exercise and (vii) spirituality. Conclusion: Holistic care, including religion/spirituality, is an important approach that should be addressed by nutritionists to maximise the care of their patients.
